Breathaplasta Thermal can be applied directly to brick, block and stone and is compatible with all masonry types. Thermal is a fast-setting, low-density lime based plaster designed for rapid build-up on the internal face of solid masonry to improve thermal insulation and reduce heat loss.

Equipment required

Breathaplasta Thermal
Clean water and brush or mister
Hawk, trowel and plastering tools

Recommended plaster thickness

20-30mm per coat by spray machine. Up to 30mm (max per day).

Coverage per 9kg Thermal bag

Approx. 2 square metres at 10mm thickness

Setting time per coat

Approx. 2 hours

Surface preparation

Plan junctions between different material types to help minimise thermal bridging.

Ensure the masonry is consolidated. Use Thermal to dub out any large holes and to level the wall prior to main plastering.

Primer may be required if surface requires the addition of a key or to unify the suction rate across a wall of multiple background types. Mist the surface with clean water 10-15 mins prior to plaster application to control suction as needed.

Recommended plaster application

  1. Mix Thermal to approx. 5 litres of cool, clean water per 9kg bag of dry powder used.

  2. Mix the plaster using a paddle mix for approx. 3 minutes.

  3. Apply at 10-15mm per coat by hand. A maximum thickness of 30mm per day can be applied, building up to a total maximum thickness of 120mm over multiple days.

  4. Scratch each coat of plaster in a diamond pattern to create a key for follow-up coats. Leave each coat to set and firm for approximately 2 hours.

  5. Trowel flat and even, and leave lightly scratched (devil floated) to provide a mechanical key for the finishing plaster. Apply Breathaplasta Smooth or Universal as the finishing coat within 1–2 days.
