Breathaplasta Thermal is ideal for use as part of the Wood Fibre Board IWI System, as using Thermal to level the masonry walls prior to fitting the boards adds additional airtightness and thermal insulation to the wall to further reduce heat loss.

Equipment required

Breathaplasta Thermal
Clean water and brush or mister
Hawk, trowel and plastering tools

Recommended plaster thickness

Apply levelling coat(s) of Thermal in even 10-30mm coats

Coverage per 9kg Thermal bag

Setting time per coat

Approx. 2 hours

Important notes for wood fibre IWI system

Ensure the masonry is consolidated. Dub out the masonry if needed - fill holes and level off.

Levelling coat should be set and firm before fitting wood fibre boards.

Breathaplasta Universal should be mixed and applied to the reverse side of the board using a 10mm u-notch trowel to provide a combed coat. Immediately place the board in position against the wall and knock into place with your hand.

Boards must be mechanically fixed through the levelling coat and secured into the masonry structure behind. Fit first board at base of wall – fasten in the centre with one fixing. Fit additional boards ensuring vertical joins are staggered. Use 5 fixings per board on masonry, or as specified by board manufacturer.

Recommended plaster application

  1. Mix Thermal to approx. 5 litres of cool, clean water per 9kg bag of dry powder used.

  2. Mix the plaster using a paddle mix for approx. 3 minutes.

  3. Use Thermal to dub out any large holes and to level wall prior to main plastering.

  4. Apply levelling coat(s) of Thermal at 10-15mm per coat by hand (approx. 2 hrs setting time per coat) or 20-30mm per coat by spray machine. Up to 30mm (max per day).

  5. The plaster should be made flat and even using a trowel or straight edge, ready for boards to be fitted. Levelling coat should be set and firm before fitting wood fibre boards. Boards must be mechanically fixed into masonry background.

  6. See Installation Guide for Wood Fibre Boards for how to apply a plaster finish to the boards.
